Managing Director BayWa Agri Supply & Trade (BAST) – Fertilizers – Rotterdam (JUST FULFILLED)


Think boldly – the new kid on the block. Are you able to provide start and lead the fertilizer business to achieve and drive the European strategy, growth and profit objectives? In this role you will build out the fertilizer department of BAST. Working closely with Anglo American, BAST management, Cefetra companies across Europe and other partners. In the first 2 years you will build-out the strategy, marketing, distribution network and team of the fertilizer department. After year 2 the implementation where you manage the operations and key account/partnership management to eventually sell 2.5 million tonnes Poly4 in the European market per year.

BAST has an extensive commercial and logistics platform across Europe’s agricultural value chain with direct access to the farmgate through its Cefetra subsidiaries. In March 2019 BAST and Sirius Minerals signed a partnership agreement for the exclusive distribution of Poly4 in Europe ( mining company Anglo American purchased Sirius Minerals in early 2020. Anglo American, a world leading mining company, will bring financial, technical and product marketing resources and capabilities to the development of the project. The takeover marks a return to fertiliser mining for Anglo, which has owned phosphate assets but in recent years has focused on mining copper, iron ore, diamonds and platinum.


Job Purpose Build, Lead and Direct the management of BAST Fertilizer department with P&L responsibility, providing strategic direction, product & portfolio management, commercialization marketing & sales direction to facilitate the achievement of business objectives. Key Accountabilities Setting-up the department (year 0 – 2) AA plans to have commercial production of Poly4 in early 2022. This gives you and your team the opportunity to build a strategy in close collaboration with BAST management & Anglo American Fertilizer management. Important elements:
  • Develop go-to-market strategy for each market for each down-stream level: fertilizer producers, coops, blenders, distributors, farmgate
  • Identify key markets (focus markets in early years while Poly4 production is still ramping-up)
  • Distribution channels: find partners that allow wide access to European market.
  • Setting up technical & commercial trials with opinion-makers from top-down levels fertilizer producers, coops, blenders, distributors and farmers across
  • Establish a team of new hires, key people internal and partners
  • Develop a pricing strategy: premium granular product with bulk volumes
  • Supply chain logistics to move up to 2.5 million tonnes per year
Leading and coordinating (year >2) Lead the development and implementation of the European fertilizer strategy in close coordination with BAST management, AA management, Cefetra companies across Europe and other internal and external partners to maximize its short, medium- and long-term profitability and returns to shareholders.   • Proven track record, excellent reputation and network in the fertilizer industry
  • Ideally a professional with in-depth knowledge and experience in the fertilizer business in marketing and positioning of fertilizer products
  • Believes in the disrupting potential of the Poly4 product in the European market
  • Entrepreneurial, you are building a large business from scratch
  • Location is open for discussion
  • MSc. or BSc. in a relevant program and related B2B industry complemented with training/courses in leadership, Business Development and/or Marketing management. (MBA is preferred)
  • 5-10 years of progressive, professional management level industry experience, including a minimum of 3 years in an executive/management/leadership positions with substantial P&L responsibilities
  • Ability to setup / analyse corporate finance and financial documents related to business processes. Strong knowledge of business, product, marketing and sales principles, and overall financial awareness
  • Languages: Fluent English + ideally two other languages (French, German, Spanish)
  • A strong personality to be able to deal as a peer with C level partners at Key Accounts, distribution partners
  • An international vision/openness is also important including desire for international travel
  • Comfortable while acting as figurehead or “standard bearer” of BAST Fertilizer and representing during (external) meetings, conferences, negotiations, contact with media
